Okay, a few things.

I have NO IDEA how people with kids keep their house neat and organized all the time. My brain literally cannot process how this works. We live in a tiny place and only have two kids but good lord the mess. Each day I declare that THIS IS THE DAY that I will stay on top of the madness and then fifteen minutes after both kids are awake, there’s toys and books, and — my personal favorite — crumbs everywhere. Then the dishes start to accumulate in the sink and the laundry starts to overflow and the beds need to be made and I am at a loss for where to start. How do you moms do it?!

In an effort to curb some of the chaos, I’ve taken a few recent pilgrimages to IKEA and felt like I really hit the jackpot when I found these $30 bookcases. THIRTY DOLLARS. Not only did I immediately throw two of them (okay hoist them, they’re v. heavy) onto my unwieldy cart but I purchased them without even knowing if I’d have enough room in my mid-size SUV to get them (and Landon) home. Spoiler alert: they made it home.

I should also mention that I had a loose plan when I bought these shelves. For one, they allow us to utilize wall space which is MAJOR! And secondly, they mask a lot of the clutter when stored in cute white boxes and wooden crates.

I bought two to flank our TV and then once they were up, I immediately reached for my Dymo label maker. I love this thing! I bought it years ago to use for scrapbooking but now I’m actually using it for it’s intended purpose and it thrills me to no end. Briar is always wanting to help me punch out the letters and occasionally when I’m feeling generous, I’ll allow it ;)

Most of the boxes are filled with Briar’s most used art supplies and Play-Doh but there’s also a box for video games and a box for receipts. There are even empty boxes just waiting to be filled which is it’s own kind of unique pleasure.

Most nights John and I will have dinner and catch up on a few episodes of The Office or my new fave show, Catastrophe, while I sit back and admire my new bookcases! (Ahhh, the romance is alive and kicking.) The toys inevitably get dumped out several times the next day and I will continue to scratch my head over tidiness (note the crayon marks on the wall) but then I look at my pretty white boxes neatly labeled and organized on the bookshelves and all is well in my world in that moment.
