Tips for Keeping a Clean House With Little Ones | Ann-Marie Loves x Lemi Shine

It’s not the dirty diapers. It’s not the crying jags. It’s not the lack of sleep (okay, it’s kind of the lack of sleep). My biggest hang up about being a mom of two little ones is the messes! Oh em gee, you guys, everyday is a struggle to stay on top of the toddler tornado. We live in a small space so if we don’t rein in the clutter and clean up after ourselves, this tiny little house can look like a disaster in 0.2 seconds.

Thankfully, Lemi Shine reached out to me again (read my first post here!) and totally inspired me to streamline my routine and give this this house a serious spring cleaning! While I am certainly no expert and could use allllll the help I can get, I have learned a thing or two about what works for me when it comes to keeping a clean house. In partnership with Lemi Shine, I’m here to share some of my top tips for staying on top of the daily mess:

Tips for Keeping a Clean House With Little Ones | Ann-Marie Loves x Lemi Shine

Prioritize. My mom instilled in me one very helpful life lesson: there can be dishes in the sink, there can be a mountain of laundry on the bed, but COME HELL OR HIGH WATER, the bathroom will be spotless. There are no two ways about it. Because of this hard fast truth, I always begin my cleaning routine by grabbing Lemi Shine’s Glass + Surface Cleaner and wiping down the bathroom counters, making sure the mirrors are free of water spots, and scrubbing the toilet. I’ll also swap out the towels and make sure they are hanging evenly on the towel rack (OCD at it’s finest!). From there, I’ll work outwards and clean up other high traffic areas, including the kitchen, the living room, and the dining room.

Recruit help. 2.5 has been an interesting age, to say the least. One day my toddler is sweet as can be and other days she’s…not. I’m trying my hardest to channel my inner Janet Lansbury and allow Briar to have both the space and the boundaries that she craves, but man! Easier said than done. However, when we are in the midst of a difficult moment, I’ve learned that I can turn it around on a dime if I ask Briar to help me with a task — any task. In fact, she loves being a helper, whether it’s something as small as grabbing a diaper for Landon or something as big as helping me cook dinner. This usually means a task will take twice as long to get completed than if I were to just do it myself but it’s so worth it when I can see it building Briar’s self esteem and empowering her to make her own decisions. Plus, it’s nice to have extra help!

Thankfully I feel great about letting Briar help me clean up with Lemi Shine products since they are made of 100% natural citric acids and are free of any harsh chemicals or toxins. I’ll squirt a little bit of Everyday Cleaner on a rag and have her wipe down tables and dressers and even the floor! She takes her job very seriously.

Do what you can. I often hear this Teddy Roosevelt quote echoing in my head: “do what you can with what you have where you are.” It’s a simple adage, but man, it rings so true as a working mom who also would like to have an occasional moment to myself. I feel like I’m always ten steps behind of schedule but I’m slowly learning that I CAN make things happen if I just use small pockets of time to tackle tasks. If I have fifteen minutes, I’ll throw Landon on my back like a baby sloth (thank goodness for Ergos!) and clean up a single room instead of feeling like I have to clean the WHOLE house or nothing at all.

I also try to multitask whenever possible, so I’ll unload the dishwasher while I wait for the oven to heat up, or I’ll wipe down the bathroom counter while I supervise bathtime. Everyone has fifteen minutes to spare so use those time slots to your advantage!

Tips for Keeping a Clean House With Little Ones | Ann-Marie Loves x Lemi Shine

Create a routine. One of my favorite tips for keeping the house clean is to build non-negotiables into my everyday routine. For me, this means doing laundry and running the dishwasher every single day. I know this sounds like a lot, but I promise it’s not that hard when it becomes a habit! One of my proudest clean freak strategies is my laundry maintenance. Every night I throw a load of laundry into the washing machine and fold the load as soon as it comes out of the dryer. This way I never have a mountain of laundry to deal with AND our clothes don’t get wrinkled. Truth be told, I don’t mind folding clothes and hanging them up. There’s something about the act of making neat piles and having an organized closet that makes me feel like I have a tiny bit of control over my life. At the end of every week, I’ll run a regular cleaning cycle with Lemi Shine’s Washing Machine Cleaner to remove hard water build up and any funky odors.

I also have a rock solid dishwasher routine that helps to keep our tiny kitchen clean and ready for the next meal. Every night before bed, I load the dishwasher and let it run while we are sleeping. Then in the morning (or early afternoon, depending upon how insane our morning is), I’ll unload it. I also like to encourage everyone to put their dirty dishes and silverware directly into the dishwasher instead of letting them sit in the sink (unless they need to be soaked, of course). Much like my laundry routine, I also use Lemi Shine’s Dishwasher Cleaner every 1-2 weeks to keep our dishwasher in tip top shape and ensure that our dishes get squeaky clean.

Family Holiday Cards 2016 | Ann-Marie Loves x Minted

Do you know what moms really love? FAMILY PHOTOS. Do you know what two year olds really hate? FAMILY PHOTOS.

Family Holiday Cards 2016 | Ann-Marie Loves x Minted

This year I was determined to get a few solid Morris family photo gems for my mom (and me!) to frame and treasure forever, but Briar clearly had other ideas. There were tantrums, there were tears, there were staunch refusals to even look in the vicinity of the camera — ha! It ended up taking two separate photo shoots on two separate weekends when all of us could get together in one place, but thanks to the powers-that-be, we managed to score a handful of cute shots (Briar included!) that were totally Christmas-card worthy.

Once I got over the hurdle of getting a few decent photos, I then had to decide which option use on my parents’ holiday cards. And since my kids were in most of them and I am 150% biased on how adorable they are, it became a real challenge to choose a single image! Thankfully, Minted had this perfect collage design (in gold, no less!) which allotted me FIVE separate spots to include my favorite captures of everyone. It was perfect.

Once I finally decided on a design (there are so many good ones to choose from!), it was super easy to fill the photos in and order the cards ASAP. My parents have been a tremendous help to me and my little family over the past year (and forever, for that matter) that the very least I could do was help them put together their Christmas cards to send to loved ones near and far.

Family Holiday Cards 2016 | Ann-Marie Loves x Minted

When the cards finally arrived, I was thrilled with how they turned out! But if we’re being honest, no one was more excited than Briar. For someone that put up such a fight against getting in front of the camera, she sure loves looking at the different photos of herself on the card — ha! Two years olds, y’all…

If you like to the wait until the last minute (UHH, THAT WOULD BE ME), there’s still time to order your Christmas — or even better, New Years! — cards! Use the code GIFTEVENT to save 15% and be upgraded to priority shipping from now until December 20th. If I can get my two year old to cooperate, you can get your cards ordered! ;)

The Grass Is Greener Where You Water It | Ann-Marie Loves x Cross Pens

2016 has been quite a year, no? I was reading an article that listed the worst years in human history and this past year made the cut…YIKES. Personally, it wasn’t my finest hour on record but it also wasn’t my worst. A lot of really great things happened to me in 2016: I got pregnant, I found a nice rhythm with work, Briar turned two, we moved into a cute place, I had Landon (!), and I came to the startling realization that the grass is greener where you water it.

crosspens-2

I’m sure you’ve seen that quote floating around on Pinterest many times. In fact, I’m sure I’ve pinned it at least three times, but it took until recently (when I really needed it) for the words to hit me over the head and finally sink into my consciousness. The grass is greener where you water it. So true on every single level, right? So what if I don’t have everything that someone else has…look at all the amazing things I do have! After years and years of comparing myself to others, I’ve learned the comparison trap is just that — a trap! — and it never fails to make me lose confidence in who I am and what I have.

The Grass Is Greener Where You Water It | Ann-Marie Loves x Cross Pens

My life may look pretty small on the outside: I spend most of my days balancing two babies with freelance work. I don’t drive a fancy car and I can’t quite afford California real estate just yet. I don’t take many fancy trips. Half of my wardrobe still doesn’t fit me as I maneuver my way through the postpartum phase of life. I spend many days wondering what in the world am I doing?! But in spite of all these perceived shortcomings, I find so much joy in my everyday when I focus on all that I have instead of all that I don’t.

The Grass Is Greener Where You Water It | Ann-Marie Loves x Cross Pens

It’s the simple things that really make life so rich: Drinking coffee from a French press in the morning. Listening to Briar’s little voice tell me stories. Going on adventures with my two babies. Shooting and editing photos. Listening to my favorite podcasts. Decorating my tiny but cozy home. Target runs (especially of the solo variety). Long conversations with my husband. Shopping with my mom. Drinking wine. Dancing until my feet hurt. Making things with my own two hands. Crawling into a warm bed at night.

The Grass Is Greener Where You Water It | Ann-Marie Loves x Cross Pens

One of the easiest ways for me to focus on how green my own grass really is is by writing down memories in my kids’ individual baby journals. We started a journal for Briar before she was born and we continued the tradition with Landon. I don’t write in them everyday or even every week, but whenever I carve out a few minutes to reflect on their milestones and how proud and in love I am with them, my sense of gratitude spills over into every aspect of my life. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: the more I express gratitude, the more things I have to be grateful for!

It only took thirty years but I’ve finally seen the light.

John and I just moved to a new place with only days (hours?) to go before our second baby arrives and as I mentioned before, I have been in crazy nesting mode. This flurry of third trimester activity has included but is not limited to: faux wallpapering a huge wall in the shared nursery, getting on my hands and knees and scrubbing the tub into oblivion, washing item after item of baby clothing and linens that I own, sterilizing all the bottles and pacifiers that this child might come in contact with, and wiping down every last surface of our space at least ten times. Needless to say, I want to welcome this baby into a squeaky clean home.

Ann-Marie Loves x Lemi Shine

Thankfully, I have partnered with Lemi Shine just in time to get the job done right! That means, no toxic chemicals or harsh ingredients that would be unsafe for me to inhale or for any member of my family to come in contact with.

Briar is in this awesome stage of wanting to help me with almost every task, especially anything that allows her to use the step stool at the kitchen counter. When I’m busy loading the dishwasher or preparing a meal, I keep her occupied by filling the sink with a little bit of water and Lemi Shine concentrated dish soap and let her “wash” her own plastic bowls and cups.

Let me tell you, she takes her job very seriously! I get such a kick out of her enthusiasm plus I don’t have to worry about her tender skin encountering harsh chemicals.

When it comes to the bathroom, I like things to be CLEAN. No toothpaste left in the sink, no hair in the tub, no towels hung haphazardly on the rack, and no spots on the mirrors. Thankfully, Lemi Shine’s Glass + Surface cleaner as well as their Shower + Tile spray gets the job done right.

Life with a toddler (and another baby on the way) is a messy job. Briar’s latest trick involves taking bites out of all the fruit on the table and leaving them scattered throughout the house. I mean, I love this girl to pieces but the sticky spots and the toddler teeth marks on all our produce are not exactly my jam.

Luckily Lemi Shine makes all kinds of household products that keep everything from my countertops to my floors in tip top shape. I’m so thrilled to have found them right before we add another baby to our family and take everyday messes to a whole new level! You can find Lemi Shine products sold at a store near you. (P.S. Don’t forget to bring coupons before you shop!)

What I Know to Be True | Parenting Edition | Ann-Marie Loves x Ralph's

We’re two years in as parents and while we still have so much to learn, John and I have definitely gleaned a handful of life lessons when it comes to raising a little one. For example, it takes a million years to get a baby buckled in and buckled out of her car seat. I have no idea why it takes so long, but I’m always exhausted by the end of the process. Also, there is no greater gift that a child can give her parents than a loooooong nap — or if you really win the lottery — a full night of sleep. Seriously, can you think of ANYTHING better?

Aside from those little nuggets of wisdom (or were they?), I have teamed up with Ralph’s Grocery to share a few things that I know to be true about parenting babies from birth to two years:

What I Know to Be True | Parenting Edition | Ann-Marie Loves x Ralph's

Invest in lots of sturdy and safe tableware. We introduced Briar to solids at the age of four months so very early on in parenthood we were already using bowls and spoons (not to mention tons of bottles!). Once she learned to crawl around, her favorite activity became pulling out all the plastic bowls and plates from low cabinets. At the age of two, we go through several bowls, plates, cups, and silverware on the daily since it always seems like meal or snack time. I can only wash so many dishes in a day (before losing my mind) so it’s nice to have more than enough serve ware on hand. We especially love these divided plates and colorful plastic silverware made from recycled milk jugs by Re-Play!

What I Know to Be True | Parenting Edition | Ann-Marie Loves x Ralph's

Stash wipes everywhere. I have wipes in the car. I have wipes on the changing table. I have wipes in the bathroom. I have wipes in my bag. You never know when you’ll need to change a diaper or clean sticky hands or quickly mop up a spill (I’m amazed at how effective they are with treating spills!). We really love the Water Wipes and the Simple Truth brands.

What I Know to Be True | Parenting Edition | Ann-Marie Loves x Ralph's

You can never have enough snacks. My backpack might as well be a lunchbox because it is always chock-full of squeeze pouches, Goldfish crackers, apples, and water bottles. When Briar and I are out and about, I know that I can calm any sour mood instantly with a quick snack.

What I Know to Be True | Parenting Edition | Ann-Marie Loves x Ralph's Grocery

Stock up on medicine before your little one gets sick. During Briar’s first year, she had all the standard baby ailments: colds, teething pain, gas, fevers, and a few ear infections. The problem with these ailments is that although they are to be expected, they always seem to flare up in the middle of the night when you’re unprepared (why is that??). Through trial and error we have built up a nice stash of home remedies, so now we are ready to ease any toddler or infant discomfort at a moment’s notice (i.e. 4 AM). Some of our must-have items are Baby Tylenol, gripe water, Orajel, Boogie Wipes, and of course, a reliable thermometer.

All of the items that I mentioned above (plus so much more!) can be found in the Baby Care aisle at your local Ralph’s Grocery!

Ann-Marie Loves x Kohl's Camping Collaboration

I grew up camping fairly often, both with my family and with Girl Scouts, and I have incredible memories of sitting around campfires, sleeping in tents, and waking up to fresh air. There’s nothing quite like spending time in the great outdoors, yet for some reason I’ve become that person that values warm showers and air conditioning over tasty s’mores and sleeping under the stars. However! I am determined to give camping another go simply because I know Briar will absolutely LOVE it. That girl has never met a pile of dirt that she didn’t love and I owe it to her to give her as many outdoor experiences as possible.

So while I warm up to the idea of spending a few nights in nature, I’ve decided we can tackle the next best thing: backyard camping! In partnership with Kohl’s, we pulled together our camping essentials and “roughed” it in the backyard for a fun-filled adventure.

Ann-Marie Loves x Kohl's Camping Collaboration

First things first: coffee!

Ann-Marie Loves x Kohl's Camping Collaboration

Using the impossibly cool blue enamelware percolator + mugs from Stansport, I was able to enjoy a fresh batch of coffee while Briar enjoyed a cold mug of milk.

Things were off to a very good start.

We put together a little dining area and enjoyed popcorn made with Stanley’s 13-piece prep and cook mess set. Briar was all about the popcorn situation. She loved sneaking in bites and scooping spoonfuls back and forth between the bowls using the big ladle (which she quickly adopted as her own).

Cheers to dining al fresco!

The ciao! baby portable high chair proved to be super helpful when it came to feeding this little gal. The cup holder kept her water bottle close at hand and the easy-to-clean surface was perfect for quick clean-up after polishing off a whole bowl of popcorn!

In addition to acting as the perfect makeshift table, the Stanley 30-quart cooler kept our beverages nice and cool during a blazing hot summer day.

Okay, how awesome is this tent?! I love the retro feel and was pleasantly surprised with how roomy it was inside! It felt very Moonrise Kingdom. Briar was also a big fan of turning the LED lantern on and off, on and off…

Ann-Marie Loves x Kohl's Camping Collaboration

We quickly made ourselves right at home and read Briar’s favorite stories by the light of the lantern. It was such a relaxing evening and I loved having that cuddle time with my girl outside while a cool breeze blew through our tent.

Ann-Marie Loves x Kohl's Camping Collaboration

Our first camping experience was a success! I’m feeling a little more confident now about taking our adventures on the road to a more remote destination. Three cheers for the great outdoors!

Now it’s your turn to stock up on camping goods! Click HERE be entered to win a $50 Kohl’s gift card! NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Ends 8/1/16 at 11:59:59 p.m. PT. Ann-Marie Loves x Munchkin | STEP Diaper Pail

I’ll be honest: I am in no hurry to potty train Briar.

I know a lot of people cringe at the idea of having two babies in diapers but for some bizarre reason it doesn’t bother me (joke’s on me?). Sure, diapers are definitely an expense, however, the idea of constantly having to run to the bathroom with a toddler or clean up inevitable accidents on the floor…well, let’s just say I am more than happy to let her make the call as to when she is ready.

Ann-Marie Loves x Munchkin | STEP Diaper Pail

This is especially true as the weather heats up and we spend more and more time outside, either swimming or lounging in the kiddie pool or splashing around at the water table. The last thing I want to do is repeatedly shuttle her in and out of the house in her wet bathing suit to use the bathroom. I mean, I barely want to do that for myself! (Is there any grosser feeling than peeling off a wet bathing suit? Blah!)

Ann-Marie Loves x Munchkin | STEP Diaper Pail

Because of this, I’ve set up a little changing area for Briar on the patio, complete with Munchkin’s new STEP diaper pail and a basket full of swim diapers, wipes, sunscreen, towels, and a few other necessities for outdoor water play.

Ann-Marie Loves x Munchkin | STEP Diaper Pail

Ann-Marie Loves x Munchkin | STEP Diaper Pail

I think my favorite part about the STEP diaper pail (aside from the fact that it eliminates odor better than any other trash system we’ve used!) is how sleek this thing looks! Baby products tend to be hit-or-miss when it comes to aesthetics, so to be able to reap the benefits of form AND function in one product? Well, consider me sold.

Ann-Marie Loves x Munchkin | STEP Diaper Pail

This little watermelon is allllll about outdoor livin.’ If she could stay in that kiddie pool forever, she would be one happy camper. The only way to get her out of the water with minimal tears is to promise her that we will immediately put her in the bathtub…girl knows what she wants!

Ann-Marie Loves x Munchkin | STEP Diaper Pail

Ann-Marie Loves x Munchkin | STEP Diaper Pail

I’m pretty sure this is exactly what the coming summer is going to look like: my naturally tan baby living it up in the sunshine and her pale mama hiding under several layers of sunscreen and a giant hat (ha!).

Ann-Marie Loves x Munchkin | STEP Diaper Pail

If your babe is currently in the diaper stage of life, you can purchase the Munchkin STEP diaper pail at your local Target. And best of all, for every pail purchased, Munchkin will plant a tree! Win win.

my mom’s a gem + diamond earrings giveaway!

Posted on: Friday, April 15, 2016

UPDATED: The winner of the diamond earrings is Jamie (#2)! Congrats!

Ann-Marie Loves x JTV | Diamond Earrings Giveaway!

My mom and I are definitely different people, but there are a few key things that make us two birds of a feather:

  • We love a good mall. We will travel far and wide for a good mall.
  • Our favorite place to eat is at Cava in Montecito. It’s a long way to go, but it’s worth the trek for seafood enchiladas!
  • We’re both night owls who love nothing more than sleeping in.
  • We can’t decide if “You’ve Got Mail” or “It’s Complicated” is our favorite movie. So we watch both. A lot.
  • We are forever running at least fifteen minutes late. It’s the worst habit in the world yet neither of us can seem to break it.

Ann-Marie Loves x JTV | Diamond Earrings Giveaway!

And finally, we both have come to appreciate the value of understated jewelry. Okay, let me clarify: my mom has always appreciated the value of understated jewelry. Me? Not so much. I had to go through many an oversized J. Lo hoop earrings / blinged-out costume jewelry phase throughout my high school + college days to get to where I am now. But hey! Here we are, together.

Ann-Marie Loves x JTV | Diamond Earrings Giveaway!

The bottom line is that my mom is my best friend and the first person I thought of when it came to gifting a pair of these beautiful white diamond stud earrings from JTV’s collection of insanely gorg diamond jewelry. After all, she’s the one who taught me everything I know: how to be a friend, how to be a mother, how to be a wife, and how to see the bright side of any situation. She’s a gem.

Ann-Marie Loves x JTV | Diamond Earrings Giveaway!

Now it’s your turn to win a pair of these earrings! To enter, follow JTV on Instagram and then leave a comment below letting me know what your ideal morning looks like. I’ll announce the winner at the top of this post on Friday April 22nd! Good luck!

Ann-Marie Loves | Thoughts on Squeezing It All In | Vaseline Lip Tins

My new favorite phrase that I apply to just about any scenario is “LIFE.” Because really, life! It happens for the best and it happens for the worst but it just keeps happening whether we are ready or not. Most days I feel like I hit the ground running and don’t stop until my head hits the pillow again. Caring for a toddler while trying to fit in work and blogging and friends and family and occasionally trying to squeeze in a little “me time” is an ongoing juggling act that I have yet to master. So I’ve made it my mission this year to simplify, simplify, simplify wherever possible!

Ann-Marie Loves | Thoughts on Squeezing It All In | Vaseline Lip Tins

Getting out of the house in the morning is always huge production with a toddler in tow, but one thing that has made it a little bit easier are Vaseline Lip Therapy Tins. I’ve been using Vaseline products for years, for everything from removing my eye makeup to hydrating my dry skin to softening my feet with socks overnight, so to now have the product in a lip care format (in a cute tin to boot!) is exactly what I needed. Even if I don’t have time to do my hair and makeup, I always make sure to slather Vaseline on my lips before I run out the door.

Ann-Marie Loves | Thoughts on Squeezing It All In | Vaseline Lip Tins

I recently picked up a bunch of different lip tins from Target (yessss!) and have them stashed just about everywhere: my makeup bag, my purse, my coat pocket, my car, my bedside table…all over the place!

Ann-Marie Loves | Thoughts on Squeezing It All In | Vaseline Lip Tins

Even Briar loves to get in on the action by repeatedly opening and closing the lids (and occasionally dipping her finger in them!). We live in Southern California where super dry Santa Ana winds wreak havoc on our skin and lips, so I figure it’s never too early to teach her survival skills!

Ann-Marie Loves | Thoughts on Squeezing It All In | Vaseline Lip Tins

Thanks to Vaseline Lip Therapy Tins, I’ve been able to simplify my beauty routine and spend those saved minutes on things I actually want to do, like play with traveler’s notebooks! I made this one out of scratch paper and I love keeping it in my bag (along with my tins!) and pulling it out to document little moments from my crazy but very happy life.

Gold Brushed Holiday Cards | Ann-Marie Loves + Pear Tree Greetings

With Christmas fast approaching, I knew I wanted to get holiday cards but I also knew that we needed an updated family photo. As much as I would have LOVED to have had one of my favorite photographers capture us in the finest light, there was simply no more time left to get it done. Enter: the camera self timer.

John was fighting off a bad cold, Briar was desperate to jump out of my arms and roll in the dirt, and I had to change my shirt twice, BUT WE MADE IT HAPPEN. I got a great family photo (plus a few more gems!) and my dream of sending out holiday cards in 2015 was actually made feasible. Small victories, people.

Gold Brushed Holiday Cards | Ann-Marie Loves + Pear Tree Greetings
This year I partnered with Pear Tree Greetings and chose a brushed gold style holiday card from Genevieve Gorder’s collection (P.S. I love her). My love affair with a gold is showing no signs of stopping plus I love the simple design.

Gold Brushed Holiday Cards | Ann-Marie Loves + Pear Tree Greetings

These cards are so thick! I’m obsessed with sturdy paper goods and these totally fit the bill.

Gold Brushed Holiday Cards | Ann-Marie Loves + Pear Tree Greetings

On the back, I took a single photo slot and turned it into two images with a little Photoshop magic. I like to bend the rules, what can I say? ;) I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season and receiving lots of happy mail!
