Scrapbooking and I have had a rocky relationship over the past couple of years, but the one project I always get excited about is the December Daily. I’ve put together several albums in the past and absolutely loved the process. Most of my books were pretty detailed and stuck to the daily format, but the thing is, I have yet to actually complete an album. So this year I decided to keep things as simple as possible. I’m making a 3 x 4″ album, heavily inspired by Jamaica and Liz. Those two make incredibly beautiful, minimalist books that I am so inspired by! Here are a few ways that I’m keeping things simple:
- I’m printing all my photos at home, so I’m able to resize my images exactly to my liking AND use my digital brushes.
- I’m adding photos and memorabilia as I see fit instead of on a daily basis.
- I’m keeping the focus more on the photos than on the embellishment.
Eventually I will bind the book together by punching two holes and adding binder rings. Super basic. Here’s what I’ve done so far:
The cover is a just a photo of my little family paired with one of my hand lettered digital brushes and text added in Photoshop. Last week we all took turns passing a cold around to each other, so on John’s sick day, I decided that we needed to seize the daylight hours and get a photo for our Christmas card. We rigged up a crazy “tripod” (high chair + basket + camera bag), turned on the self-timer on my camera, and did our best to get a good shot. Surprisingly enough, I was VERY happy with the results! It would have been a million times easier to have a professional take our picture, but in a pinch, the self-timer came through!
I can’t make anything without incorporating yellow, so I introduced it right away! I love this photo of Briar. Girl is feeling the Christmas spirit!
You guys, it was 90 degrees here yesterday. NINETY. So instead of focusing on how I live in the wrong state, I decided to embrace the bizarre heat wave and include a photo of the most beautiful bougainvillea, paired with text and a digital brush. California Christmas, y’all.
Making an entire spread out of a single photo is probably my favorite technique for mini books. It’s such a fast and effective way to make a statement!
Taking a page from Jamaica and Liz and just using one embellishment. My normal course of action is to go heavy-handed with the embellishments but I love how a little self-restraint brings in so much white space! Also, look at my sleeping baby, would you? This is not a common sight so of course I had to take an awkward selfie of the moment.
Another photo from our Christmas card shoot, along with a digital brush and letter stickers.
